Agronomist

Managing pests, diseases and pollution are just some of the many tasks that my role entails at Burlington Berries. Aside from typical agronomy work, I also have technical input into non-harvest positions and the management of many husbandry tasks in trial plots. The wide variety of tasks and responsibilities within my role ensures my knowledge is always growing and my skills within agronomy are forever evolving.

I’m originally from Victoria and upon completion of studying Land Management at TAFE, I chose Tasmania because of its vibrant agricultural industry. Before starting at Burlington Berries, I was only looking for temporary positions, however, I love the role so much and upon being offered a permanent position, have decided to stay.

The new experiences and challenges of my role help keep every part of my day interesting, and I am always growing and learning. A key part of my role is to act as the liaison between our farmers and non-harvest team including the management of pests, diseases, and pollution. I conduct controlled trials to ensure season after season that Burlington Berries is continuously improving its growing practices and techniques.

Burlington Berries is always striving to improve, whether it is our physical structures, crop production or worker experience, Burlington’s dedication to its growth and team set us apart from other farms. It is the main reason I would recommend people to apply for a position at the farm.

I love being able to see the seasons change. Every day I get to be outside working with plants and looking at quirky things—sometimes you’ll come across an albino plant, and other times, enormous strawberries!

The team at Burlington Berries is very strong and even though everyone has different areas of expertise and come from different backgrounds, everyone’s opinion is valued.

Burlington Berries was established in Tasmania in 2012. Originally from NSW where the Sutherland family has farmed for generations, Kate and Stewart purchased Burlington Farm in 2010 as a location for their premium pasture seed business Upper Murray Seeds. In 2012 they joined with long term friends and 50% business partners Marion and Jon Regan and they established Burlington Berries. The next generation of Sutherlands now call Tasmania home, working alongside their parents to deliver a ‘Better Berry’ for all Australians to enjoy.
